MATARA


Matara is a fascinating place situated on the banks of Nilwala River and The Blue Ocean in the South, unique to it's own nature and culture. The two star shaped Dutch Forts were built in mid 17th Century. Matara Fort was destroyed by the Kadyan army in 1761 and Dutch Commander built the little Star Fort later. This city is a great place to travel as a beach holiday as well as an excursion. The district around Matara is has highly varying bio diversity. The coral reef of Polhena, Old Church, Archeological Museum, Veherahena Tunnel Temple are major attractions. The Dutch church in Matara was built in 1769.
